If you’re enjoying the warm weather this week, spare a thought for our operatives!
Regardless of the weather conditions our guys will be out installing traffic management systems on Britain’s roads.
You may not think it but working in extremely warm and sunny temperatures poses a risk to road workers on motorways or rural roads.
Here are our tips for keeping cool in hot weather.
Working for long periods in hot weather can lead to dizziness and dehydration, which can cause a serious or even fatal accident!
Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:
- Headaches
- Dizziness
- Lightheadedness
- Fainting
- Moist skin
- Irritability or confusion
- Nausea/vomiting
If you or a colleague experience one or more of these symptoms whilst working in hot temperatures, then you must attempt to cool down as soon as possible with ice packs or cold water.
If urgent medical attention is required please call 999 immediately!
Stay safe and well in hot weather by following these simple steps:
1) Make sure you get enough sleep.
2) Wearing the correct PPE will help protect against sun rays and your hard hat will protect your scalp.
3) Drink lots of water, avoiding alcohol.
4) Complete strenuous tasks in the morning or evening when it is cooler.
5) Take regular breaks in the shade.
It is your employer’s responsibility to make sure you have adequate access to shade, rest breaks and water.
You must let your employer know if you have any medical conditions or if you take any medication which may affect your ability to work in warm conditions.
